Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your background?
I’m Mathilde Fernandez. I'm a musician and performer. I’m born in France and exile in Belgium since 3 years. After studying at the Fine Arts, i decided to join the world of performing arts. I work today between Brussels and Paris.
How would you describe your music?
Baroque and contemporary. I sing french songs that contain some electro pop sounds. Also, a lyrical side can be perceived in the use of my voice.
What are your musical influences?
I'm being influenced by various musical styles like New Wave, Rock, Classical, songs with intelligent lyrics, and World Music. I like to mix different styles, deal with tensions and accidents.
When I was younger, I was influenced by great personalities such as Kate Bush, Nina Hagen, Klaus Nomi or Rita Mitsouko.
What are your future musical projects?
I’m going to play several concerts early April and take part in festivals like ‘Les Femmes in Mix’ or ‘The Gaite Lyrique’ in co-tray with Jay-Jay Johanson. Others festivals are planned for summer. My new clip is coming out very soon. I’m so excited! I have aslo been working on new compostions for my next album.
There is a cinematographic character in your music. What movies would you recommend?
I need to completely immerse myself in a story with its sound and image. The way i create is the same; the music is accompanied by pictorial lyrics, which are often escorted with a photographic research method or a video.
I need to combine all these elements for inviting people to enter my world.
I would advise: Aguirre, the Wrath of God by Werner Herzog, Solarisby Andrej Tarkovsky, Black Moon by Louis Malle and The Holy Mountain by Alejandro Jodorowsky.
What inspires you in terms of style?
I like sober but complex things, precise cuts, strong colors such as red and subtle tricks of material. I am very curious about the new libertarian school which plays and does not follow the rules, as the brand 'Vêtements’ for instance. I like to find the eccentricity in the combination of simple pieces.
